Investment Banking Resume – Value Added Elements

Your Geographic Location
International exposure is a value added element on your investment banking resume. Relocation/international travel happens a lot in the IB world. Tell your employer that you can and you have been working in various geographies is a definite asset. I notice some candidates are highly international ever since they were interns. When you start to write and build up your resume, make sure to keep a record of your work base and mark them on your resume.

Deal List
This is something you need to build up in order to enrich your future resume. If you are new in the market and your deal list is short, you can include it as part of your resume. However as your experience grow, attach it to your resume as a separate document. Be selective. Make sure to keep track of the deals you have significant participation and with reasonable quality. This will serve as a support document to prove your ability and experience.

Outstanding Achievements
Not everyone has this, but if you have, keep them on your resume. 'Outstanding' does not mean you were selected the best student of a certain university or the best employee of a certain company. However awards from open competitions or public examinations are. For example, you were one of the winners of Warren Buffet’s Award to Philanthropy and Young Leaders to 16 students in the USA; Again, be selective. Don’t make it too long a list. Make it attractive enough for you to stand out from your peers.

Star analysts in investment banks are paid well. While some people move faster than others, you will normally move up to associate level after being a third year analyst. In ten years time, even you are at MD level, you are still referred to be an analyst, if your focus is still in research.

Henry’s resume speaks for himself and he doesn’t need to write long. His resume is not only outstanding in terms of work history, he has also demonstrated his very talented resume writing skills. In terms of format, it is clean, tidy and easy to read. In terms of content, he has highlighted his achievements in a short and precise way. Certainly he has had lots of achievements that made him walk fast on his career path, but he has only listed those that are most interested to hiring managers.

As I have reiterated in my blog, the first day you start your first full time job, you should aim at building a resume/career history like Henry’s. Look for some good quality internship or graduate program should be one of your primary targets during your undergraduate years.

Elements Of An Outstanding Resume

If you ask me what the most important element of a good resume is, I would say ‘content’ – of which, work history is the priority.

When I receive outstanding resumes, I will proactively do canvass for the candidate, ie. Send out ‘speculative’ resumes, in a headhunter’s term. Here I have generated a bio from one of my most admired resumes. This candidate has been off core investment banking roles for some time, but I am happy to sell him as a CFO candidate.

Why is this resume outstanding?
Frankly, this candidate does not possess a long list of degrees and professional qualifications, and does not speak seven languages. He actually has only one bachelor’s degree and is bilingual with English and Chinese. You will notice that he stay with each of his employers for a considerable period of time – meaning he is stable. Most of his movements, either internal or external, are upward movements – meaning he is doing well in all the jobs he does.

A Good Work History is the Backbone of a Good Resume
As I said in my previous post, any bachelor’s degree will enable you to start an investment banking career. However in the long run, you need to build a good work history in order to contribute to a good resume. Just like a top chef would still need good ingredients to cook with.

Remember, the way you move, indicates how successful you are in your career path. Start building a good job history the first day you start your first investment banking job. Be selective and look for a good investment bank to start with. Think before you accept any lateral move. Bear in mind one is fine, two is not preferred, three is not acceptable.

Why is This a Sample Resume?

David’s resume is not an investment banking resume, but it is a good sample resume for any one in any industry. A good work history is the soul of a good resume. In this respect, David is perfect. His resume is also perfect in many ways. Let’s look at them one by one.

Education: Good education with outstanding results.

Age: David is 39 years old and has a young family. He is old enough to have sufficient experience to contribute, and he is young enough to grow with any organization. Due to discrimination law, personal info like age and status are usually not required, but David chose to disclose these on his resume, which is certainly appreciated by hiring managers.

Experience: He had three jobs only in 18 years of time, proven to be stable.

Career history: You can see distinct promotion records in the two companies he worked for. His AUM grew from A$200K to A$70m in eight years’ time while he was with Famous Chemicals. The number of people he managed grew from 18 to 325 in nine years’ time while he was with Famous Exhibitions. His responsibilities grew from a domestic account manager to president, bearing regional P/L accountabilities.

Look & Feel: A clean and tidy layout, easy for readers.

Length: Just right. David has 18 years of experience and he's targeting a CEO role, therefore a page and a half is fine.

Weakness: David didn’t include his contact info on his resume. Please make sure you won’t omit this when writing a resume.

Think Before You Accept A Lateral Move

The other day I received a resume in which the candidate had four jobs within the same company in four years. Actually he changed job every year however without a single promotion. Hello, this isn’t a healthy trend. Unless you are on a pre-planned rotation trainee program, otherwise you have to be very careful when accepting a lateral move. Once is fine, but once a year is too much. David Smith’s resume is sure to make all the hiring managers eyes blink because he had distinct promotion in each of his move, not only upward movements, but distinct growth in AUM and the number of people he managed.

In any resume, hiring managers want to see upward vertical movements and not continuous lateral movements. Keep this in mind towards building your own sample resume.

Craft Your Own Sample Resume – Investment Banking

In today’s exercise, you are required to use Henry Hunter’s sample resume to craft your own. Remember your resume is an important tool to set your feet into the Wall Street firms.

Let’s go back to 1993 when Henry was just graduated from MIT with his dual degrees in Science and Management. With such qualifications, he was likely to outperform any other candidates. But that’s not enough. Investment banking is a matter of human relations and networking. Therefore, you should also list your extra curricular activities to demonstrate your people skills.

While nowadays Henry doesn’t need these to appear on his resume, he is reluctant to write his list. I have therefore borrowed my niece’s instead. Actually I have shortened the list by half. Isn’t it amazing that a young person can do that many things while studying full time? If you’ve read Margaret Thatcher’s autobiography, my niece was actually quite lazy.

Make sure you keep a good record of yourself and be selective of what to include in your sample resume. List activities that are people-oriented and with team spirit. If you play football and swimming, list football. If you won a photography competition and a debating competition, list the debating award.

When writing a resume for your first full time job, make sure to include your internship experience. Hiring managers always want people with a well-rounded personality and a good balance of life.

Always keep your incredible achievements on your resume, regardless of your experience
As you gather more and more experience, the significance of your activities weight less and less. If at some stage you consider your experience is solid enough to sell yourself, you can omit your activities list completely. However if you have something really outstanding, it is always good to list it. For example, one of my candidates obtain straight 'A's in any of her examinations, she always keep this info on her resume.

Why is this best Sample Resume?

Yesterday I promised to tell you why I grade Henry Hunter's resume as a sample resume. To be honest, it is not easy, as there are lots of criteria to fulfil. Henry's is one of my most admired sample resumes throughout my eight-year investment banking headhunting life. These are the reasons.

Consider the reader: The reader of this resume is a headhunter or a hiring manager looking to hire a quantitative strategist. At the first glance, they want to find out what the candidate is doing, with who and for how long. At a prominent position, Henry laid out his strength and achievements, which encourages the hiring manager to continue reading. Remember, hiring managers at the investment banks are extremely busy, they spend on average 30 seconds reading a resume. If they have to surf through your resume to look for information, they’ll just choose to file yours and go on to the next.
Layout: Clean and tidy, easy to read.
Length: Just right, one page.
Education: Solid and unusually outstanding.
- Henry obtained dual bachelor degrees in 1993 at MIT.
- In the next four years, he obtained two master’s degrees - from famous institutes of MIT and INSEAD.
- In the following year, he qualified as a CFA. All his qualifications are highly desired by investment banks – computer science, management, finance, CPA.
Perfect job history: This is what I described as ‘off page criteria’ in the early stage of my blog.
- Henry spent a considerable amount of time with each of his employers. He is proven to be stable and at the same time aggressive.

Answer to my previous question: What is Alternative Investment?
An alternative investment is regarded as an investment product other than traditional investments such as stocks, bonds, money markets and/or cash.

As the definition of Institutional Investor magazine's Alternative Investment Newsletter, alternative investments include: commodities, financial derivatives, hedge Strategies (or absolute return strategies), real estate and private equity, as well as venture capital. They are supposed to have very low correlation with traditional investment products. However, this definition may not be suitable due to a fast-changing investment environment, and should be re-considered over time.

Some Alternative Investment managers, such as Hedge Funds, cannot advertise or announce their performance under U.S. and European law. Most Hedge Funds or Private Equity Groups only accept investment from high-net-worth individuals or institutions.
